MULLET

 

Other names: striped mullet, Large mullet are called "Horse Mullet", Small mullet six inches or smaller are called "Finger Mullet".
Description: Mullet have an irregularly round, silvery body, with a dark bluegreen back and dark latteral stripes on the sides. Due to the Mullet's tiny mouths tells you these fish can only eat something small. They eat by sucking in mud and water then strain out tiny bits of food.

 

Habitat/Habits: Mullet are one of Texas's most abundant fish, occurring in practically all environments, from fresh to hyper saline waters.
Fishing tips: Caught with
throw or cast nets in tidal ditches and around spoil islands, While on the beach you'll occasionally see mullet jumping out of the waves. or as you are out in the water you can see them swimming within the waves themselves. mullet are a popular bait fish used live or dead, whole or cut.

 

USING MULLET AS BAIT
Here are several ways to use mullet:

FIRST choice of most fishermen is to use "Finger Mullet" whole and hooked through the nose live -or- Use finger Mullet dead and threaded onto the hook.
SECOND choice would be to take a "Horse Mullet", Scale it and chop it into 1, 2 or 3 inch chunks (Depending on the size of your hooks).
THIRD choice is to use a mullet 8 inches long or larger hooked through the nose live.
