Blue Crab
Blue Crab

* Blue crabs are very common in coastal bays and shallow waters of salt marshes. They take shelter where they find it, hiding among salt marsh plants or in eel grass, or digging right into the soft mud of the open bayfloor.

These crabs eat almost anything they can get their claws on from fish to shellfish to dead animals on the bottom of the bay.

A crab can cut your bait free from the hook with his claws and can do this (without) moving your line. This is why sometimes you'll pull in your line that seemed untouched yet it has no bait. It took me several years to figure this out, The way I learned this was by pulling in countless crabs accidentally getting their fat claw inside the gap of my hooks.

The best revenge is using it as a bait.

But, remember, Don't use a crab that has eggs on it's belly. (It looks like a clump of mud)

Using Crabs as Bait
Thanks to John for asking the question:
"How do you hook a Crab as bait?"
How to Hook a Crab

Putting a Hook through a Crabs shell isn't easy, You have to drill the hook through the Shell going down from top to bottom, The motion is like turning a key On, Off, On Off...etc...I prefer a 7/0 hook for all my larger baits, I have yet to use a Crab for bait, But from Fishing with others is how I learned this technique. You can also catch Red and Black Drum with Crabs. *And as always Check your State regulations for Limits and rules, Below is a link to some Texas Crab Regulations.

*Important Note: Check your local and state regulations before using any crabs as bait for
Redfish, Black Drum or Jackfish!
